Acting Classes for Adults and Children

Spring 2008

Introduction to Acting (adults)

6 Weeks, Tuesdays 6-8 PM,  April 1- May 13 (one week off)

Instructor: Caroline Nesbitt

Fee: $125

Students develop fundamental skills for acting in the live theater. Stage presence,

voice and movement skills are explored. Students work in a creative and un-pressured

environment to develop performance skills for monologue work and small cast multi-

character scene work. Topics for class work include: relaxation and creative energy,

imagination and improvisation, action/ blocking/ choreography, working with scripts,

emotion memory, continuity, and artistic essence. The class will lead to a rehearsal /

performance project presented for an invited audience (family and friends).

If you ever wanted to try acting- or if you just want to be more relaxed and confident in front of a group- this class will give you the tools that you need!

Intermediate/ Advanced Acting (adults)

20th Century Realism

6 Weeks, Wednesdays 6-8 PM, April 2- May 7

Instructor: Robert Shea

Fee: $125

The techniques of realistic acting are explored and practiced. Sessions

begin with exercises that challenge student actors to "push the envelope"

physically, emotionally, and intellectually. Actors are encouraged to break down

inhibitions in one's personal playing style and go beyond preconceived ideas

about what one can or cannot do with specific script materials. With a free and

expressive approach to scene play, participants apply realistic acting techniques

to rehearsal scenes from selected great plays of the 20th century. Student actors

will explore the world of "invisible artistic structure" encased in realistic choreo/

blocking and poem/ song/ dialogue. Actors of various levels and backgrounds

come together to find new ways of "Being Real" while at the same time imaginative and expressive. Actors work in a confidential, creative and safe atmosphere

are encouraged to have a good time.

Class time is comprised of discussion 25%, exercises and theatre games 25%,

and creative scene work 50%. Discussions include the ideas and experiences of

acting theorists and practitioners such as Konstantin Stanislavsky, Tadushi Suzuki,

and Uta Hagen. Text materials include the classics of 20th century realism as: Mourning Becomes Electra by Eugene O'Neill, Hedda Gabler by Henrik Ibsen, and Silence by Harold Pinter. The scripts allow student actors to explore a range of styles within the broader period/ artistic movement referred to as 20th century realism.

Creative Dramatics for Children

The Magical World of Theatre!

4 Weeks, Tuesdays 4-5:30 PM, April 8- 29 (8 to 12 years old)
