Think Steely Dan mixed with a sultry female vocal and you've got all the motivation you need to head to the Barnstormers Theatre in Tamworth, Saturday, September 20th. The Motive is a Boston based band that performs regularly at Boston hot spots like Harper's Ferry and the Sky Bar. The four-member band will be returning to its native New Hampshire to premier at the Barnstormers Theatre on Saturday, September 20th.
Twenty-five-year-old lead singer, Maria DeMaio, spent her childhood summers in Tamworth. In the summer of 2000, she was a mainstay at The Other Store in Tamworth, NH. As manager of the Daley Café, she chopped, flipped, baked, and served with the best of them. As the summer wore on she became known as "the singing waitress." During the Concerts by the River series at The Other Store, patrons would often see her jump up on stage to sit in on a song or two when she wasn't too busy with the BLTs. DeMaio herself puts it best, "The Valley is woven into my being. When I was a little girl I ushered at the Barnstormers and served lemonade and cookies at intermission. I can remember wanting so badly to be on the other side; to be on that stage instead of in front of it."
DeMaio attended the University of Pennsylvania where she minored in music theory. Her music exploits include performing at Carnegie Hall, recording an award winning acappela CD, and fronting a blues band that toured the New England area. DeMaio brings a throaty, sexy lead to the otherwise male band. The Motive plays a mixture of rock, folk, and blues that is said to "swing so hard it hurts."
On Saturday, September 20th, DeMaio will be returning to Tamworth Village with her new band, The Motive, to perform at the Barnstormers Theatre. The show begins at 7:30pm and admission is $10. Tickets can be purchased in advance at The Other Store in Tamworth Village, or at the door.
